Actually, a step or two (literally!). With the physical therapist yesterday, Cory stood up twice! His balance seems pretty good. They had him take a few shuffle steps to the side when he got back in bed. He was also able to use his legs to lift most of his weight up. Of course, ever since he has been trying to get up and out of bed.
Another step. They have also taken Cory off of the oxygen and disconnected all the monitoring cables, etc. He also got moved to a regular room on the Neuro floor. He does has someone sitting in the room with him, since he does need to be monitored 24/7.
They are talking about moving him over to the inpatient rehab unit at the end of this week. There he will be working with the therapists 4-5 hours a day!
My daughter told me about a talk that D. Todd Christofferson gave at a CES Fireside this January titled "Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread". In it he says, "As you retire to bed, think about the successes and failures of the day and what will make the next day a little better" He then promised that “your [daily] reflections will increase your faith in Him as you see His hand helping you to endure some things and to change others. You will be able to rejoice in one more day, one more step toward eternal life.”
In his talk, he says to "To deal with something very big, we may need to work at it in small, daily bites.".
We have a very wise gentleman in our church ward who says, "You eat an elephant one bite at a time!". (Thank you Brother Duke!)
So, as we kneel each night, we are thankful for God's hand, so clearly seen in our lives. We pray for the strength of just one more day. I know that God will not burden Cory or us more than we can take. We are so grateful for the prayers of everyone. Know that they give comfort and are being heard. To those of you with Missionaries out in the field. Thank them for their prayers. Know that God is watching over each of them.

We don't know you personally, but share a common love for these missionaries as our son is also serving in the Georgia Macon Mission. I learned of Elder Fife's accident through a "missionary moms" email group and every day since he has been in our prayers and I added his name to the Mount Timpanogos prayer roll. My 5 year old son, Ryan, has taken this connection of a hurt missionary in his big brother's mission to heart and is very dedicated in remembering Elder Fife in EVERY prayer...so I hope he doesn't mind being remembered and blessed right along with the grilled cheese, in our family prayer, and at Ryan's bedside. :) We are so glad to hear of his progress and healing. We have been uplifted by your positive attitude and the wonderful quotes you have shared in these blog posts. We will continue to pray for Elder Fife, your family, and those who are supporting and serving you through this experience.

ReplyDeleteWe Live in Gilbert, AZ but.. Our daughter lives in Savannah! When I visited her and her family I met your son! What a great sweet Elder! We do have a missionary in the MTC headed for Italy in ten days and I do know that Heavenly Father's hand is in ALL! I have felt the spirit of Elder Fife in our home and I know our son and his district have felt the spirit of Elder Fife as well as we have continued to fast and pray for him! Our son has asked me to keep him updated so he can update his district as well. We continue to pray for Elder Fife and your whole family! Your family has shown such incredible faith and strength in such a difficult time! Please know that we think of Elder Fife and your family very often as we have shared his and your families strength and journey!Our daughter shared yours and Elder Fife's companion's testimonies from church on Sunday with me and all I can say is... You all are an amazingly strong faithful family! You should be so proud of Elder Fife and your family! As I said we will continue to pray for that "next day"!

ReplyDeleteWe've never met, but I hear you've met my family. My parents, Bob and Veronica Cowart, are in the ward where Cory is serving. I live in Lehi, Utah and had a baby in November, 16 weeks early. Your blog posts amaze me because it seems our sons are going through a lot of the same things! My husband and I pray for your son every night (especially since we know what part of town he was in when the accident happened!!), and I just wanted you to know that your blog helps me so much! You inspire me, and I pray that my 1 1/2 lb (now almost 6 lbs) baby grows to be as stong a man as your Cory. I'm down in Provo every day visiting the baby at Utah Valley, so if your girls need anything, please let me know. You are the last people I need to tell, but prayer is real and Heavenly Father is listening!
